On a surface, draw a cartoon; just make it simple. If you’re not an artist, you can copy illustrations from books or from your favorite fabric/china pattern. Try creating sketches first before the final drawing. If you’re bored at home or in the office, you can do some sketches.
Depending on the design, choose the appropriate tile size. Lay out the tiles without gluing them to see if the colors blend well together. Be careful in handling the tiles, especially if you’re using glass.
Once you’re happy with the lay out, it’s now time to glue the tiles. The best glue to use in mosaics works is the Weldbond. It is non-flammable, non-toxic, and versatile; it also dries fast and suitable with different kinds of mosaic materials. You can also clean it easily using water and ordinary soap. Make sure that the space between each tile is approximately 1/8 inch or even less.
Leave the glued tiles for a day. Some mosaic artists leave their work for over a week to dry. Since you’re making a simple project, one day may be enough but check if the tiles are glued strongly. Get a regular tile grout and grout your work. Choosing the grout’s color is also important.
Purchase grouts with contrasting color. For instance, if the tiles are white, don’t get a white colored grout. By putting contrasting grout on the spaces, you can enhance the detail of the design. Try darker colored grouts. When the grout is still wet, it will appear darker but as it cures, the color lightens. Grouting is a messy task and it would be better to do it outside the house. You can learn more about grouting techniques from books. If you have children, keep it out of their reach.
If you’re doing a complicated design, lay out the tiles on a mesh and glue the tiles sparingly. You can also pick the tiles using contact paper. Then spread cement or glue to the surface. Press the sheet containing glued tiles unto the cement or glue.
Beginners should start with very simple projects. If you start with complicated ones, you will hardly accomplish anything.
For floor or wall mosaics, you should create a mosaic plaque first so that you can choose the appropriate materials and techniques to use. If you’re unsure about the right glue to use for mosaic or the grout, ask the handyman or the store owner at your local hardware.
Alchoices keep in mind that you can’t rush a work of art. This is also true even when you’re doing a simple mosaic project. Don’t rush yourself. Take your time and you will have satisfactory results. Just incase you’re not satisfied with the results, you can alchoices pry the tiles off using a screw driver. Don’t forget to wear goggles for eye safety.
Try to create a unique design. Choose a design that shows something of your personality or your interest. Keep things simple especially if this is your very first project. As you gain experience in creating mosaic designs, you can now try advanced and complicated designs.
