Wood Working Plans 3 Practical Tips For Making Outdoor Furniture

| |
If you are thinking about wood working plans, summer must be on its way, its a great time for making outdoor furniture for your yard. The first thing you need to decide is exactly what type of outdoor furniture you want and where its going to go.
Maybe you are thinking of outdoor table and chairs or a garden bench or even something simple like a bird table, so where do you start? There are so many different styles and the question is what do you really want? Go to your local home center, garden center or outdoor furniture store and get some ideas. Once you have in mind what you want then its time for the wood working plans.
When it comes to wood working plans you probably think you have two choices, draw your own or buy a set of plans. Well actually there is a third choice; you can buy a set of plans that are close to what you want and modify them to suit your needs. For example you might want a longer or shorter bench or a different size table.
If you have worked with plans before it is fairly simple to modify them. If you are new to wood working you want to keep it simple so Id suggest you stick to the plans; that way you will get a better result.
Once you have your plans either your own or the ones you bought, you need to work out how much timber you are going to need for your project and decide which timber to use. If you are using the wood working plans you bought, there will usually be a list of timber that you need. If you drew your own plans then you will have to work out your own list.
Before you go off to the lumber yard think about what type of timber you want. A lot depends on whether you want a natural wood finish or a painted finish.
If you are going for a natural wood finish then Red Cedar is a good choice. If you want a painted finish then pine will work for you. Both timbers are readily available and generally easy to work with.
Cedar is widely used for outdoor decking and trim, its usually not kiln-dried and is often sold with a high moisture content. Pine also, often has a high moisture content.
  • Practical Tip #1
  • To get the best results for your wood working project buy the material at least two to three weeks before you are ready to start construction. Stack your timber in a dry location with spacers between the boards, allowing for plenty of air circulation so the material will dry out. This way you will get less warping or splitting of the wood after you have built your outdoor furniture.
    • Practical Tip #2
    • There are many wood glues available but not all of them are suitable for outdoor projects. Be sure to use a glue designated for exterior use, that way your finished project wont fall apart the first time it rains.
      • Practical Tip #3
      • When it comes fasteners, screws etc make sure they are also suitable for outdoor use. To avoid the fasteners rusting and staining your finished work, use brass, stainless steel, galvanised or plated, your local hardware store will advise you.
Take your time, wood working is a relaxing and very satisfying pastime. Whether you draw your own wood working plans or buy them, when your project is finished you will have something to be proud of and that will last you a long time.
